When a business calls about a glass door, the glass is intact more often than not. What has failed is a closer that no longer holds its adjustment, a bottom pivot that has worn its bearing, a threshold that has loosened under a decade of foot traffic, or a top patch fitting that was never torqued correctly. Replacing a door because the hardware is worn is expensive and unnecessary; diagnosing the hardware first is what we do.
There is a common warning sign worth knowing. A door that has started to drag on the threshold, or that only latches if you pull it, is usually telling you the bottom pivot or the closer's spindle is worn. Left alone, the door begins to load its own weight into the glass or the stile, and a hardware repair turns into a door replacement. Catching it early is measured in hundreds of dollars; ignoring it is measured in thousands.
Interior glass doors have a different failure profile. Office and conference room doors are lighter, but they are hung on patch fittings, pivots or hinges that were set to a specific glass thickness and hole pattern. Once a hole is drilled in tempered glass it cannot be changed, so replacements must match the existing fabrication exactly — which is why we record the fitting model and the hole layout before ordering anything.

This is the decision that drives the cost. The honest test is whether the door leaf and frame are still true; hardware is consumable, doors should not be.

Diagnosis is confirmed on site. A door that has been misaligned for a long time frequently needs both hardware and leaf work.
Aluminum-framed leaves, all-glass doors and interior wood-and-glass doors use entirely different hardware families and price very differently.
Narrow, medium and wide-stile aluminum doors accept different locks and closers. Stile width limits the hardware options before anything else is considered.
A door cycled hundreds of times a day needs heavier-duty hardware than one used a dozen times. Specifying for actual cycles is cheaper than replacing light hardware twice.

It is at minimum a nuisance and can become a safety and liability issue in a public building. A slamming door usually means the closer has lost fluid or its adjustment, and it is one of the cheaper repairs on this page.
If the glass is sound, the fittings can normally be serviced or replaced. If the leaf is cracked or chipped at a fitting, the whole leaf must be replaced — tempered glass cannot be repaired.
Hardware repairs are often completed within days once parts arrive. A replacement all-glass leaf is fabricated to the existing hole pattern and typically takes longer, since holes are made before tempering.
We match the current product where it is still available. Anodised and painted finishes weather over time, so new hardware beside older hardware may read slightly differently. On a bank of doors, replacing matching components together looks better.
