Sequencing frameless shower installs

The order of operations that keeps 3/8" tempered panels from coming back to the shop.
This page is about scheduling, not product selection. A frameless enclosure is fabricated to a set of measurements taken from a finished room, and heavy tempered glass cannot be modified afterwards. Everything below exists to answer one question for a homeowner, builder or superintendent: when is this bathroom actually ready to be templated, and what has to be locked down between template and install.
The failure mode is consistent across the trade: a hinge or clip has to be relocated, a panel does not sit plumb against a wall that moved, or a fixed panel is a quarter-inch proud of a curb that was rebuilt after measurement. None of those are glass problems. They are sequencing problems that showed up at the glass.
Which enclosure configuration suits the room — single panel, door and inline panel, ninety-degree return, neo-angle, steam — is a separate decision, covered in the frameless shower door guide. Configuration should be settled before templating, because it determines where the hardware lands and therefore what has to be backed.

Why templating happens after tile, grout and cure
Architectural drawings describe intent. A finished shower describes reality, and the two routinely differ by more than the tolerance heavy tempered glass allows. Substrate build-up, tile thickness, mortar bed variation and a rebuilt curb all move the surfaces the glass has to meet.
Waiting until after grout matters for the same reason: grout lines and any final adjustment to the curb change the plane the glass seals against. Waiting for cure matters because the enclosure will be measured against surfaces that are still being worked on if it is not.
Tempered glass is fully processed before it is heat treated. Holes, notches and edgework are fabrication steps, and no part of the panel can be drilled, cut or ground once tempering is done. A measurement taken too early does not produce a small correction later; it produces a new panel.
Readiness checklist before the template appointment
Run this list before booking the measurement. Anything unchecked is a reason to move the appointment rather than a reason to measure around it.
The room
All wall, curb, bench and niche tile is set, grouted and cured; no repairs or replacements are outstanding.
The curb is in its final height and pitch, and the pan slopes to the drain without ponding.
Shower valve, head, body sprays and any fixed fixture are in their final positions.
Any wall or ceiling that the glass will meet is in its final finish, including paint or stone.
Adjacent finishes that could obstruct the door swing — vanity, towel bar, door casing — are located.
The design decisions
Enclosure configuration and door swing direction are confirmed and will not change.
Hardware finish and hinge type are selected, since these determine hardware footprints and backing.
Blocking or an approved anchoring substrate exists behind every hinge, clip and header location for the chosen layout.
Steam enclosure or standard enclosure is decided, since a steam enclosure changes the transom, header and sealing scope.
Glass thickness and any low-iron or textured option are chosen, because they change weight and therefore hardware and backing demands.
What a proper template records
Dimensions are the least interesting part of a template. What determines whether the enclosure closes cleanly is the record of how the room deviates from square: plumb of each wall at hinge height, level of the curb along its length, out-of-square at each corner, and the bow of any long tiled wall.
Those deviations are resolved in fabrication — through hinge selection, wall-profile allowance, and how much notch or gap the design can absorb — not by forcing the glass on install day. A template that captures only width and height pushes the deviation onto the installer.
Hardware positions are established at the template against the actual backing, not scaled from a drawing. Where the intended hinge location has no backing behind the tile, that is discovered at the template while there is still a decision to make.
Between template and install, the enclosure is frozen. Any tile repair, curb rebuild, fixture move or wall refinish after measurement needs to be reported before fabrication rather than discovered at delivery.
Install day and the first week
The panels are dry-fitted before anything is fastened, so a discrepancy is found while the glass is still supported rather than after a hole is drilled into finished tile. Hardware locations are marked from the fitted position and drilled into the backing established at template.
Every through-tile penetration is a hole in a waterproofed assembly, so each is sealed as it is made. Sealant selection matters: a neutral-cure silicone suited to glass and the adjacent finish avoids the staining and edge fogging that acid-cure products can cause on some stone and metals.
Doors are hung, swing and clearance are checked against the fixtures and the adjacent finishes, and the closing position is set. On a hinged frameless door, the fine adjustment happens here — not on the second visit.
Sealant needs to cure before the shower is used, per the product instructions the installer supplies. After that, the maintenance that matters is simple: squeegee the glass, keep the hardware dry, and report any change in how the door closes early, while it is still an adjustment rather than a repair.
Scheduling notes for builders and remodelers
Fabrication turnaround is a real block of schedule time between template and install, and it varies by fabricator, glass thickness, hardware availability and the amount of custom edgework. Confirm the current turnaround with the fabricator or glazier at the time of order and build the schedule from that figure, not from a remembered one.
The most common recovery from a missed sequence is a second fabrication run, which costs the full turnaround again. That is what makes the readiness checklist worth ten minutes before the template rather than after it.
On multi-bathroom projects, templating all enclosures in one visit only works if every room is genuinely finished. Templating the finished rooms and returning for the rest is usually faster than holding the whole package for one lagging bathroom.

- Can the shower be templated before the tile is installed?
- No. Tile, mortar and any substrate build-up change the surfaces the glass has to meet, and the deviation is usually larger than tempered glass can accommodate. The template happens on the finished, grouted and cured surfaces.
- What if the tile has to be repaired after the glass is measured?
- Tell the glazier before fabrication starts. Once panels are cut, drilled and tempered, they cannot be altered, so a change to the enclosure surfaces after measurement usually means refabricating the affected panel.
- How long between template and installation?
- That is fabrication turnaround, and it varies by fabricator, glass thickness, hardware and custom edgework. Ask for the current turnaround when the order is placed and schedule the following trades around it.
- Does a frameless enclosure need blocking behind the tile?
- It needs a substrate that can carry the hardware loads at each hinge and clip location. Blocking installed at framing, before waterproofing and tile, is the straightforward way to guarantee that — which is why the configuration should be chosen early.
- When can the shower be used after installation?
- After the sealant has cured according to the manufacturer's instructions supplied with the installation. Using it earlier risks disturbing seals that have not yet set.
